Evaluation
For this induction assignment I had to research the
positive and negative effects of file sharing and music piracy on the audience,
artists and on the sites offering file sharing. I had to read an article on the
music industry and had to highlight and analyse it which was pretty simple. I
made analysis on the people who were against illegal file sharing. I then had
to research the music industry and its views on illegal file sharing which I
found interesting that there are so many different views from everybody on this
topic, I found it difficult to find enough information on the negatives of file
sharing because there wasn’t much on the internet and there was only so much I
could think of.
After that the whole class had to do a debate on the
following proposition.” Illegal file sharing is destroying the music industry”.
Half of the class were allocated a position either affirmative or negative and
we had to debate each other. We had to come together as the positions we were
put in and collect the information we had researched and collected. I found the
debate very hard because I was on the side that was against illegal downloading
which is the hardest thing to debate about if you are for it and also I didn’t
get much information on the negatives of illegal file sharing. After doing that
task we had to write an article for a specific magazine aimed at a target
audience on the changing face of the music industry. I had to decide on the
type of magazine and the target audience, I chose Vibe Magazine which is aimed
at urban male and female ages 16-24. I chose this magazine because it’s quite
easy to write for because I'm in that age group so I understand what attracts
the consumers.
The article had to feature some facts about illegal file
sharing, some examples of file sharing websites, and examples of artists that
have strong views on illegal file sharing (e.g. lady gaga, Keith urban, kid
rock and Elton john). We also had to give positive and negative points on
illegal file sharing and the impact it has had on the audience. Once I had done
that I had to summarise what I had said by giving my own opinions.
Once I had found
two images of things related to my article and saved it in my documents I then
had to put my article into InDesign.
Using InDesign was pretty straightforward. Copying and
pasting the article into the InDesign worksheet was easy to do. The thing I
found difficult was fitting the amount of text I had written onto one page but
in the end I realised I had to put the lines in so my article was in grids so
it made it easier for the piece of text that couldn’t fit in before to fit it.
Another thing I found difficult is cropping and moving the image after placing
it onto InDesign but once I had practiced on the first image of a Napster logo
I then found it easier to do to the lily Allen image.
Once I had
finished the layout and design for my article I had to upload it to my blog
that I had previously made for AS MEDIA. This was quite easy to do; my
strengths are the actual copying and pasting onto the space available to on my
blog, and then posting it. My weakness is when I made the mistake of naming my
blog ‘file sharing’ instead of naming the article. Eventually I worked out how
and where to write the name of the post. Another weakness is not knowing how to
post the article as a JPEG image link.
Targets for
improvement
- Writing at a faster pace
- Editing layout of articles in InDesign
- Use other sources apart from the net to get information
- How to post the article as a JPEG link
